Flushing 13.1

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

I am in my 9th week of training a beautiful group of 17 runners!

We are training for a half marathon in Flushing, Queens named appropriately the Flushing 13.1. This lovely half marathon will be taking place in historic Flushing Meadows Corona Park–does that ring a bell?  It should.  It is the home of the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fair.  The race starts at the Arthur Ashe Stadium and takes you through the park past the New York Hall of Science, the Queens Wildlife Center and the Unisphere.  At the southern end the course loops around Meadow Lake and winds back into the park for a second loop before finishing under the shadow of the Unisphere for an awesome post-race part full of beaming faces and beer.  Mmmmmmm.

I am so proud of my group which features people who have never before run, much less raced a half marathon.  They have all caught the running bug, which I knew they would.  Also, they have all become family.  I have never had a group of runners who at the end of the training, didn’t love, care and support each other.  And this group is no exception.  We all look forward to our weekly runs and I am already becoming a bit nostalgic about the end of this training.

I will introduce you to some of them over the next couple weeks and I just know you will care about them as much as I do!

So, keep at it my dear group of runners!  The pay-off for your hard work is right around the corner!

Workin’ it out with G!

Friday, September 10th, 2010

So, I think G-Unit (Greg Peters at La Palestra) is ready to kill me.
Are you G?
I just still don’t get this entire POSE running thing.

I ran by myself yesterday and I, again, felt all over the place.
Here is what goes through my mind when I’m running: (you might want to make sure you are seated for this)
Is my heel making contact, how much contact should it be making, should I be running more ‘flat-footed’ to ensure some heel contact, DON’T toe off, why is the ball of my foot killing me, my toes are numb, why do my knees ache, my feet are killing me, is my foot underneath my hip and more that I won’t bore you with at this point.

Then, I tell myself what Greg tells me: just lift your foot and let it fall, foot beneath your hip and don’t toe off, and fall-don’t push off. So simple, right?

My brain is exhausted–I know I am thinking too much.
That’s me.
I want to understand everything to the point of exhaustion and perfection–that’s my achilles heel!

G made me reluctantly take off my running shoes yesterday–don’t you regret that G–I warned you I had run in those socks already?
He pressed on the ball of my foot behind my toes and it was sheer pain.
There was no hiding the fact that I am striking the ground on the WRONG part of the foot. I should be making my initial contact on my mid-foot, not right behind my toes.

He makes it look so easy–though he has always told me that learning POSE is like learning a new language.
Still.
I have always thought I was linguistically talented–I mean I was fluent in Norwegian in a year. I’m learning, however, that I basically have learned the equivalent of how to say, ‘hi, my name is…’ in this new language of POSE.

Oh.
Wait.
Shoot.
Does that mean this will take a year?
G?
Greg?

See what I mean about my wonderment if G is ready to kill me.

Time will tell…we are meeting later today. :)

The one POSE I know well...'child pose.'

Soul Cycle

How about combining spinning with pushups, bicep & tricep curls and crunches. A gym in NYC is doing just that! I checked it out for Good Morning America Health!

La Palestra

When you are an athlete and have competed for several years you know there are two phases to your training. You have the medical phase of your training (insert a heavy sigh) and of course the fitness phase of your training (insert a happy, gleeful face).

Meaning, you invariably have seen a physical therapist or medical practitioner in addition to meeting up with your local running group or heading to the gym.

So, imagine, if you will a combination of the two in one facility.
Enter the fray, La Palestra in NYC.

La Palestra has successfully combined the two phases of an athletes training. Basically, they analyze your health and prescribe exercise. Can I get a collective back flip and exulted jump into the air? It’s every athlete’s dream, right?! Have someone analyze your ‘self’ or health and then come up with a plan for your training.

Well, as I continue to rehabilitate from my injury, they are going to be with me every step to make sure I am training appropriately and coming up with a training plan to reach my goal of the NYC Marathon.

I am totally excited about this next phase, because even I who know ‘better,’ can overdo it for myself.

Updates coming soon as I am beginning my work with exercise specialist Greg Peters TODAY!

Kara, baby Isla, me and Paula

I had the extreme pleasure of spending last Thursday with the uber talented Paula Radcliffe and Kara Goucher. They arrived into NYC to run the NYRR Women’s Mini 10K. Run, not race. You see, they both are 6 months pregnant!

Remember Paula Radcliffe?
1st–she’s the fastest female marathoner EVER!
2nd–she won the ING NYC Marathon in 2007 10 months after giving birth to her 1st born, little Isla.

Well, the two fierce competitors are now joined together via pregnancy.

Check out my story with them!

It’s our day, Runners!

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Go out and get your run on!

That’s right!
IT’S NATIONAL RUNNING DAY!
crickets…
tumbleweeds…
What? You didn’t know that this illustrious day existed? Most runner’s probably don’t know about it because every day is National Running Day. But, here is the thing about runners…we don’t discriminate. We know we have found the elixir of life and are ready and willing to share it.

So, you might be asking yourself, ‘Ok, it’s national running day, what do I do? Is there a parade? Festivities?’
Well, depending on where you live there is a lot!

In New York City’s Central Park, Runner’s World has paired with Foot Locker and has free coaching sessions all day long!

Coaches take beginner, intermediate and advanced runners through training runs, core workouts and running clinics twice a week for 6 weeks in the most beautiful backdrop in the country–Central Park. If you are interested, wear your skimpy shorts (because after all, you never know who you will meet), grab your sneaks and get on it!

If you are like me and like to run and drink, the New York Road Runners have a festive night tonight planned. Click here for the fun run and happy hour, emphasis on the happy hour.

Outside New York City, here are the events in your area.

Finally, if you don’t have anything going on in your area, start the movement yourself. Get your running gear on and do laps around the cubicles in your office. Simply shout, ‘happy national running day’ to all your co-workers. Trust me, it will be a day they won’t soon forget, and for you, you will have gotten your ‘run’ on!

Cheers and Happy National Running Day to you!

Paula Radcliffe to run for 2 and with good friend!

Paula Radcliffe

The amazing Brit Radcliffe

Marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe will run the New York Mini 10K next month.
She’s not trying to break any records, but run instead for two.
Paula is pregnant with her second child.

Oh, yah! She is also running with her friend, Kara Goucher…who is also pregnant with her first baby–and the competitors are both due on the same date!

They thought the women only event June 12th was a good way to get together before their travel is limited due to their pregnancies…as only two elite runners would think!

Sometimes you need that little push

Friday, April 30th, 2010

The title of this blog is so imperative in life, in general. We all have good intentions, whether it be to clean the house, make time to go to lunch with a dear friend or take steps to accomplish a life goal. However, it's sometimes hard to set those intentions into action. The same goes for running…especially running.

Running is unquestionably 90% mental. That's why they say, grab a buddy and make a date to go running. It's, admittedly, hard to do on your own each and every day. Yes, some of my best runs are on my own. However, my most fun runs are most definitely with someone else. Plus, if you have a running buddy…they keep you 'honest.' No backing out of a run when someone else is expecting you.

I had a wonderful breakfast date with a good friend of mine in NYC today. She's the kind of friend who wants to see you succeed and vice versa. The kind of fr

iendship that can be hard to find in a city of over-achievers, competitive friends, and false facades. We both made a pact to get some things done in our lives in the next few months. Career things. The outcome, while important, is not nearly as important as the desire we both have to see each other succeed.

I hope you have someone in your life like that.

If they are also a running buddy…big props to you! Now, get your 'to-do' list out, dust it off, and make those things you WANTHAPPEN.

Who Likes Cheese?

Friday, March 12th, 2010

I love cheese.
I don’t discriminate.

Mmmmmm

I love asiago, blue, fontina, goat, brie, and don’t get me started on my favorite mascarpone!
In New York City, the ‘go-to’ shop is Murray’s Cheese. But, check this out…you don’t have to live here to get some of the best cheese in the world!
